It's that time again; the kids are back in school, the mornings bring a chill followed by hot mid-days, and the top 150+ college-eligible ball players will storm the field at Rogers Center as the Canadian Futures Games are set to occur. 1st Overall Media, alongside RINGSZN Baseball Development & Scouting, will cover and provide analytical information on the standouts.
The Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Academy is bringing the tournament back to Toronto, as it detoured to Ottawa in 2022 for undisclosed reasons. The Canadian Futures Games was formerly known as Tournament 12, and is by far the biggest and most important amateur showcase in the country. The tournament provides opportunities for talents from each province to audition their tools in hopes of landing a spot in the showcase. Players will compete in front of all 30 Major League Baseball clubs, along with various college programs and clubs.
The showcase will format with a scout day, followed by exhibition contests, a prospect game, and a home run derby to top it off. The event will measure 60-yard dashes, display individual reps at positions, and batting. Positional velocities, exit velocities, launch angles, baseball operations metrics, pitching data, and more will all be measured, recorded, and provided to scouts.
Who will be spotlighted at the showcase? Canada’s top talent that are eligible to be recruited to colleges, and Major League Draft-eligible players. This tournament has showcased top-level names that have made it over to the majors: Matt Brash, Michael Soroka, brothers Josh and Bo are a few names that have made it to the big stage. Generations followed with Owen Cassie, Tristan Pompey, Myles Naylor, Jonah Tong, and more. Canadian Junior National team members are also expected to show out on the turf.
As a scouting coordinator and former Blue Jays Academy instructor, I can stand by this event as one of the Canadian player's top priorities in developmental goals. The tournament is held from September 19th – 23rd at the stadium. Full scouting reports and analytics to follow!
