Player Makeup
Tate Carey stands 6’0” at 200lbs on a very athletic scale. He has filled out over the years and is developing towards a more mature structure. He clearly displays raw strength with the ability to reach back for more. He’s built well from top to bottom, with a strong upper half, strong arm, and explosive lower half.
Evaluation Synopsis
Carey projects his strength into his craft using his body appropriately in his delivery. He is able to repeat his delivery on a constant basis with a good closed finish, releasing from the ¾ point. He incorporates a leg kick in his wind-up and uses the downward action of the mound to his advantage, in conjunction with the lower half.
Carey plays with a few pitches but usually executes mainly a heated four-seam fastball, slider, and changeup. The fastball is his current go-to weapon; he max’s at 93mph (we saw 90-91.5mph consistent at the Canadian Futures). He throws a ton of strikes with this pitch, with the ability to work the zone and blow it by guys. He incorporates a slider that worked around 83-84 with late-breaking movement and was quite deceitful. The slider is his best off-speed option compared to the changeup and the odd curveball. Carey commands it well, however, he can get off-track with runners on base, especially on first.
