The 2023 Major League Baseball World Series is well underway with a close series in the making. The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Texas Rangers; who would have thought?
For years and years, the American League East was present and dominant in the postseason, towards the World Series The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox were the main event in October. Along with the AL East were the top-market National League clubs; the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Fransisco Giants, and St. Lous Cardinals.
Fast-forward to 2023, two wild card teams face off to fight for MLB’s biggest prize. The Arizona Diamondbacks finished in the third wild card spot sitting 84-78, while the Rangers finished in the second wild card spot, ending with a 90-72 record.
As the 1st Overall Podcast discussed the teams with grit and the chance to pursue a long playoff hall, both of these clubs were mentioned. Arizona was built as a favorite by 1stOverall’s former podcaster, Mike Cummings, which was later questioned by some struggles in mid-August.
The Texas Rangers were hot all year, maintaining first place for a chunk of time. They went on to make a huge deal, bringing Max Scherzer over in reinforcement to the absence of Jacob deGrom. In August, the fate of the Rangers was questioned, and were on the verge of not making the postseason at all. Fast-forward to 90 wins, the Rangers went 5-0 in the first two rounds and finished 9-3 before the World Series.
Ironically, the Diamondbacks also went 9-3 with two sweeps before the World Series. Both of these teams show grit all around the field and display the ability to make this an actual 7-game series.
