After winning the Toronto series, the New York Yankees continued to roll hot and heavy in the Bronx, as the struggling Miami Marlins flew north for a three game set. The Yankees came off the opening series on a high against the division rival Toronto Blue Jays, and certainly were not affected by the solar eclipse.
The Yankees laid it on the Marlins, picking up a 7-0 win, and dropping Miami to a saddening 1-10 record to start the year. New York strung together nine total hits; Soto and Stanton pulling two each with Verdugo going 3 for 3. Soto found his pop and made use of the Yankee Stadium stands as he belted a shot in the fourth inning, along with Anthony Volpe. Soto and Volpe were responsible for knocking in 6 of the 9 Yankee runs; 3 apiece.
The big highlight of this game aside from the big-bats was the return of elite-status by starting pitcher Nestor Cortes. The lefty evened his win-loss record at 1-1 while going a strong eight innings only giving up two hits, no runs, no walks, and six strikeouts.
Cortes threw 102 pitches with 70 strikes. He forced two groundouts, 12 fly-outs, and carved the Miami bats. He filled up the zone and was confident in his command and locations against the struggling Marlins offense. He stayed within the zone and toyed with the upper and lower half of the zone while implementing his junk options. The Yankees are relieved to have this version of Cortes back.
