After a long taunting winter, and a teasing spring campaign, 46,172 fans crammed Yankee Stadium for a brisk Bronx day- game for the 2023 New York Yankees home opener. The San Francisco Giants took the field on the opposing side, starting RHP Logan Webb against Yankees Ace, RHP Gerrit Cole.
The bottom of the first brought out the Yankees captain and money-man, Aaron Judge, taking Webb’s sinker 422 feet to center field for his first long ball of the year. The Yankees went on to score five runs for the shutout win, including a Gleyber Torres two-run homer in the 4th inning, a DJ LeMahieu single to score Torres, and a Judge single to score Jose Trevino. The Yankees' offense showed up big today against the Giants.
Yankees takeaways from game one of the season
Gerrit Cole displayed full dominance in a shut-out win
Cole was absolutely dialed in today, throwing six strong innings, only giving up three hits, two walks, and retiring 11 hitters! Cole was dealing, pounding the zone, and staying on the border with his off-speed. We saw a well-commanded fastball that topped 100mph today, averaged 97-98mph, and dropped down to off speed at 88mph. Cole’s composure was evident and his comfort level at Yankee stadium was obvious.
Anthony Volpe showed up as the new starting shortstop of the New York Yankees. Volpe looked comfortable in his position and during his at-bats. He went 0-1 with a walk and a strikeout and was able to flash his speed with a stolen bag. Volpe had a good jump from his primary lead, almost a delayed secondary lead, springing into a steal. This is something to watch going forward into the season, as he will be a real threat on the base pads.
LHP Wandy Peralta, RHP Jonathan Loaisiga, and RHP Ron Marinaccio platooned to complete the shutout and the Yankees' opening-day win.
