The New York Yankees announced their fifth-starter spot in the rotation, naming right-handed Dominican Republic native pitcher Luis Gil. Gil has emerged as a dependable arm with reliable pitch options, and efficient consumptions of innings.

Gil chucked 15.2 innings in the Grapefruit League, displaying fine use of his repertoire and performing at an elite level. He appeared in five games, starting three of them, posting a 2.87 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP. He’s only let up five runs on seven hits with a high of 23 strikeouts and only six walks.

Yankees: Gil's repertoire and notebook

Gil fills up the zone with a ton of strikes, and often leads the count in-front. In 2022 he had a 68.4% first-pitch strike rate; that’s a total increase of 13.4%. He’s a 58.7% out-of-zone range with a 42.2% in-zone range rate. He’s able to paint corners and hit his spots using a four-seam fastball, changeup, and slider; his fastball was most used but his out pitch remains the slider.

The four-seam sticks around 96-97mph with run. The slider was second most used with a 34.9% usage rate and a put-away percentage of 28.6% sitting at 87.2mph; this is compared to a 5.9% on the fastball.

Gil will be a 6-7 inning starter with a ton of strikeouts, projecting a 106-66 strikeout to walk ratio. His repertoire will be valuable to the rotation.
